The Maldives
The Maldives are situated in the Indian Ocean to the south west of Sri Lanka. There are about 1200 islands in all, of which around 200 are inhabited. Their position near the equator means they enjoy year round sunshine, even in the rainy season and a consistent daily temperature of 27 to 30 degrees. Tropical rainstorms are not unusual but are normally short lived, soon giving way to radiant sunshine and blue skies. The Maldives offer an incredible diversity of sea life. The shallow lagoons and crystal clear waters are ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving.

Hanimaadhoo
Until recently tourist development was only permitted on uninhabited islands. Our location on Hanimaadhoo is a locally inhabited island, offering a rare opportunity to experience this very traditional way of life. Hanimaadhoo is located in the North and it is one of the most beautiful islands of Maldives: lush vegetation, long beaches and turquoise lagoon. It is a quiet fishing village with lots of tree-shade and swings. Fishing and agriculture is what most of the 2000 habitants of the island do for work.
It is a typical island custom that everyone finish their work by late afternoon, take their daily shower or bath near their wells, dress their children in fresh clothes and go for a stroll , visiting friends and relatives, delivering small bowls of fresh homemade curry or taking some time to relax at the beachside, watching the late afternoon sun while children play around the beach.
Part of Hanimaadhoo's charm is its complete lack of shopping opportunities - there are no tourist shops and no-one is interested in making a fast buck from you! This makes exploring the island a truly restful experience. You can borrow one of the hotel's free bikes or even better, walk into town and stroll back to Barefoot along the stunning seafront - you'll often meet some of the local children playing on the beach or splashing in the shallows while their Mothers keep a watchful eye from the shade of the trees.
